Looking Sharp?

Sandy: Here's my stripy nails! If you are looking a way to decorate your nails but modern, not too flashy or with only one colour here's an idea for steeling. The colour is dark blue but I think it would look even more stylish in black I just didn't have black nail polish at hand. he blue polish had a smaller brush than normal nail polish though not super small. It could have been smaller since with this brush I had to be very light handed and I have to confess that the above picture is of my left hand, painted with my right hand. Painting the right hand with the left was not as easy and the stripes turned out a bit thicker.
(Unfortunately, when I took the picture the light was bad and the tips of the nails are a bit lost in the shadow.)

Sandy: Hell has frozen over for I have for once followed a hot trend! I saw this metal collar on the cover of a magazine and thought "That's just what I have wished for." And joy of joys the collar wasn't expensive or rare - it's from Glitter.

Sandy: The magazine itself was a bit of a disappointment like most magazines since I started reading blogs. When I by a magazine (though this one was cheap, only 2€) I expect expert views from professionals. Not someone calling eyeglasses "army cameo pattern" that clearly where classic turtle shell, to mention one example that was annoying me. Probably wasn't genuine turtle but still...

Wendy: They should let their fabulous blogger Teemu Bling (http://thingforthebling.costume.fi) write the whole magazine!

Sandy: Is that really his last name now, Bling? And yeah, that guy knows what he is talking about.

Tartan Nails

Sandy's obsession of tartan is taken to new dimensions. Autumn is the season for tartan though it does not seem to be especially in this year but we do not care for trends.

Sandy: Now I think maybe I should have done the whole nail. I only painted the tips so it would not be too overwhelming. I tried to do plaid before but it turned out a mess so I wasn't sure how this would turn out but now I think it's close enough.

Wendy: I bought a silk top, thick silk good as new, second hand for 3 euros.

On the same shopping trip I found a bag made from some sort of tar with food advertisement on it. On the inside there are even instructions for cooking rice. It's in a language I don't understand but there are pictures. Not that anyone needs instructions to cook rice. More useful as a laptop bag I say.

Sandy: My jeans ripped and after an appropriate morning period I figured it was time to get new ones. I found these bright green pants on sale. They match perfectly this old silk scarf handed down to me that might be as old as from the 60's or 70's.

Wendy: Well, I guess that color is back in style.

The Girls Are Back In Town

Wendy: Hello! Did you miss us?

Sandy: We really know how to keep our new years resolutions!
We almost became one of those dead blogs that stop posting just as you are starting to follow it.

Wendy: Yeah and then you keep checking back hoping they are just having a longer pause until you give up hope.

Sandy: I almost gave up hope. After we got the internet connection fixed in about a week I had already filled the time with other things and then suddenly no longer had time to post. It was a mistake to promise to post often that was too much work. So from now on we will post whenever but that's better than not posting at all.
Also I got sick of the dark winter and the bad picture quality of the pictures taken in the dark.

Wendy: The summer light and the summer clothes really inspire to post.

Sandy: Actually, it was news of another blog that finally made me decide to restart the blog. It's been in the news that a blog and a book that claims to tell a true story about a teenaged girl that was bullied at school and committed suicide. Apparently the girl or her parents do not exist.

Wendy: Some say it doesn't matter whether it is true or fiction.

Sandy: And if it doesn't matter whether the story is true then why to say it is? Why not write the same stories without the lies?
There is a difference between an honest fiction with an important story and a story that is claimed to be true but is in fact a lie. And to think that people have bought the book thinking it's a true story they are paying for, not a badly written novel. If the writer had not received money and if she wasn't messing with such an important subject.

Wendy: It was horrible to read the article that revealed this hoax where they referred to studies that show that these idealizing reports of suicides increases the amount of new suicides.

Sandy: She should have written a style blog instead.

Wendy: It's unbelievable how the tv and newspaper reporters ate the story up without checking any facts.

Sandy: They forgot to check Wikipedia.

Sandy: You can tell which one of us it is by now, can't you?

Sandy: I've resisted the temptation to use song lyrics in my headlines like some do (which, if I'm honest, I find somehow annoying) but now I am the new Scottish gentry.

If you know what song that is from comment and I will applaude you! I wish I had some kind of a prize to give but I don't.

Wendy: If you did they would just google it...

Sandy: And this post would suddenly have 400 readers when we usually have ten.

Sandy: Here's a dapper party outfit. I was torn between two choices for neck-wear. I wore the tie.

Wendy: I liked the other neck-thingy better. (What is it?)

Sandy: You would, it's more feminine. (A scarf with a belt buckle.)

Wendy: You haven't worn ties so often lately.

Sandy: Actually they are making a comeback in my wardrobe. I was obsessed with ties a couple years ago but then I guess I grew a bit sick of them, really. But now I'm finding that I'm drawn to them again.

Wendy: She has more ties than any guy I know.

Sandy: Around two dozen. But I've probably spent less money on them each between 50 cents and 2 euros (second hand). And as it happens, I have a picture of few of my favorites.

Sandy: Twin outfits! I watched a documentay on the Kennedy family and saw something familiar. Ethel Kennedy is wearing something resembling my outfit here.

I was also gifted with a Hello Kitty doll wearing something similar.

Rain Dance

Sandy: So far, this winter has been rainy rather than snowy thus stylish rain-clothes are in order. It's difficult to find a good but affordable raincoat for an adult anywhere. So I bought this second hand children's rain cloak. I think its meant for children because the holes for hands are so high but thats ok. Infact, they are great because today I bought a belt (also second hand, as if you didn't already guess it) that goes trough the holes nicely and hopefully makes the cloak look less like a sack of potatoes and more like a piece of clothing.

Sandy: We made a New Years resolution to post more frequently. We failed to post our winter holiday outfits at the proper time. Here are the outfits but without the Christmas stuff because I'm sure you're sick of anything christmas-related immediately after New Years Eve.

Sandy

Sandy: I bought this dress at a drift store for ONE euro. Can you believe it? The length is a little weird. Full length dresses are usually not my thing - this is the only one I have. I thought about shortening the hem but I'm just not sure. And this way it's perfect for cold weather.

Sandy: H&M got some bad publicity for their virtual bodies attached to real faces. 

I have a confession to make. This may come as a shock to you but our photos are also digitally enhanced. But unlike in the H&M photos our bodies are real.

Some people think that style blogging is a superficial hobby (and it is just like a hobby is supposed to be) but I really think that compared to how the fashion industry considers real women unfit to be seen in photographs, style blogs can be very healthy to our culture.

Sandy: Except today, and today only, the fake meet the fake in the valley of the dolls.

Sandy: This is one of those times I wish I would have started this blog earlier. I don't have any making of pictures of this outfit I made last year. 

I wanted to wear a pattern from head to tow. But that's one of those things that magazines advertised as a big trend, yet it is difficult to actually find in any shops. At least for a reasonable price…

I bought a big long plaid skirt for 1€ from a sale at UFF. Very reasonable. 

I cut about half of the length and used the rest of the fabric to make the bolero. I never make clothes from scratch but this was easier than Iris in The Taxi Driver. The only problem was I didn't have a lot of fabric to work with. Thats why the sleeves are short which luckily looks totally intentional with the shirt couffs showing. 

Wendy: More intentional than the ill-fitting movie reference.

Sandy: I also like to mix patterns though it's a bit more difficult. Here I think I did a better job than usual, combining two geometric patterns of the same tones of grey.

PS. Sorry about the lack of shoes in my posts. I take the pictures indoors without my boots on, most of the time.

Wendy: This is a somewhat Chanel inspired outfit. Well, you can't really look at a pink and black tweed without thinking Chanel. Now you might think I'm contradicting myself because of what I said about not wanting to wear recognizable brands. (For the record, nothing in this outfit is Chanel, obviously.) This look is classic and it's been public property since the 20's. 

But I did feel it needed a twist or a kick, so I put on a studed collar we bought at a little goth shop. I loved that the woman behind the counter was a little older than you would expect a goth to be. I love it when people break stereotypes.

Wendy: I put on the little yellow fanny  bag so it wouldn't be all red and to make it more casual, less matchy. 

Sandy: I like it better without the bag.

Wendy: Back in black and white. This is the same skirt and west as in the "Halloween" outfit but it looks quite different with another top.

First I couldn't think of anything appropriate to wear to this party. Everything was too formal or too casual. The skirt with just the white the top wasn't festive enough. Then I remembered the west and it gave the outfit the lift it needed.

Sandy: That might be my favorite outfit out of anything you've ever worn.

Wendy: I had worn the west with this top before I just didn't remember it right away. It's good to save all the good outfits in this blog so I can look through them when "I have nothing to wear".
